Meg Gardiner – UNSUB (Dutton, Hardcover, $26.00, 06/27/2017)

BOLO Books Comments:

It is likely that you have already seen the BOLO Books review of UNSUB. Hopefully, that means that you have already pre-ordered this classic serial killer novel, but if not, this week you will be able to run into your local indie bookstore to pick up a copy. Run being the operative word. Be prepared to lock all the doors and turn on all the lights, as well.

Jacket Copy (Publisher’s Description):

A riveting psychological thriller inspired by the never-caught Zodiac Killer, about a young detective determined to apprehend the serial murderer who destroyed her family and terrorized a city twenty years earlier.

Caitlin Hendrix has been a Narcotics detective for six months when the killer at the heart of all her childhood nightmares reemerges: the Prophet. An UNSUB—what the FBI calls an unknown subject—the Prophet terrorized the Bay Area in the 1990s and nearly destroyed her father, the lead investigator on the case.

The Prophet’s cryptic messages and mind games drove Detective Mack Hendrix to the brink of madness, and Mack’s failure to solve the series of ritualized murders—eleven seemingly unconnected victims left with the ancient sign for Mercury etched into their flesh—was the final nail in the coffin for a once promising career.

Twenty years later, two bodies are found bearing the haunting signature of the Prophet. Caitlin Hendrix has never escaped the shadow of her father’s failure to protect their city. But now the ruthless madman is killing again and has set his sights on her, threatening to undermine the fragile barrier she rigidly maintains for her own protection, between relentless pursuit and dangerous obsession.

Determined to decipher his twisted messages and stop the carnage, Caitlin ignores her father’s warnings as she draws closer to the killer with each new gruesome murder. Is it a copycat, or can this really be the same Prophet who haunted her childhood? Will Caitlin avoid repeating her father’s mistakes and redeem her family name, or will chasing the Prophet drag her and everyone she loves into the depths of the abyss?

Mary Kubica – Every Last Lie (Park Row, Hardcover, $26.00, 06/27/2017)

BOLO Books Comments:

It wouldn’t be summer if there wasn’t a new psychological thriller from Mary Kubica. Once again, Kubica doesn’t stray far from the style that has made her a must-read for fans who love tales of domestic strife. As with her other books, multiple narration ups the level of suspense, keeping readers turning the pages well into the night.

Jacket Copy (Publisher’s Description):

Clara Solberg’s world shatters when her husband and their four-year-old daughter are in a car crash, killing Nick while Maisie is remarkably unharmed. The crash is ruled an accident…until the coming days, when Maisie starts having night terrors that make Clara question what really happened on that fateful afternoon.

Tormented by grief and her obsession that Nick’s death was far more than just an accident, Clara is plunged into a desperate hunt for the truth. Who would have wanted Nick dead? And, more important, why? Clara will stop at nothing to find out—and the truth is only the beginning of this twisted tale of secrets and deceit.

Told in the alternating perspectives of Clara’s investigation and Nick’s last months leading up to the crash, master of suspense Mary Kubica weaves her most chilling thriller to date—one that explores the dark recesses of a mind plagued by grief and shows that some secrets might be better left buried.

Christopher Bollen – The Destroyers (Harper, Hardcover, $27.99, 06/27/2017)

BOLO Books Comments:

I don’t know much about this one beyond the jacket description. But as you will see, that is more than enough. The endorsement of Janet Maslin and Garth Greenwell is enough to seal the deal. My copy is pre-ordered. Why not join me?

Jacket Copy (Publisher’s Description):

At first Patmos appears to be a dream—long sun-soaked days on Charlie’s yacht and the reappearance of a girlfriend from Ian’s past—and Charlie readily offers Ian the lifeline he so desperately needs. But, like Charlie himself, this beautiful island conceals a darkness beneath, and it isn’t long before the dream begins to fragment. When Charlie suddenly vanishes, Ian finds himself caught up in deception after deception. As he grapples with the turmoil left in his friend’s wake, he is reminded of an imaginary game called Destroyers they played as children—a game, he now realizes, they may have never stopped playing.

Jason Pinter returns to writing with a novel inspired by our most recent election. Mackenzi Lee – The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue (Katherine Tegen Books, Hardcover, $18.99, 06/27/2017)

BOLO Books Comments:

This book is just too much fun not to mention. More of an adventure tale than a mystery/thriller, it is perfect for those fun and frolicking days by the pool. As light-hearted as it is, the topics at the core are serious and this is a great way to get young readers talking about these things.

Jacket Copy (Publisher’s Description):

A young bisexual British lord embarks on an unforgettable Grand Tour of Europe with his best friend/secret crush. An 18th-century romantic adventure for the modern age written by This Monstrous Thing author Mackenzi Lee—Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda meets the 1700s.

Henry “Monty” Montague doesn’t care that his roguish passions are far from suitable for the gentleman he was born to be. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family’s estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy.

Witty, dazzling, and intriguing at every turn, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue is an irresistible romp that explores the undeniably fine lines between friendship and love.
