When we left Greg Hettinger at the end of Chapter One of The Black Hood comic, he was just starting to explore his vigilante nature. It was clear to readers that while his desire for justice was in no way dampened, his methods of achieving it were about to change.
As Chapter Two begins, Greg’s deep decent into drug addiction is now causing memory lapses and uncontrollable urges. His low self-esteem regarding his physical look is resulting in more and more nocturnal behavior. In his efforts to extract justice, Greg is donning the hood regularly while remaining off the radar of his co-officers in the Philly Police Department.
Unfortunately for Greg, someone is aware of his solo exploits – and they are none too happy about it. In one of the prime examples of how a comic can work differently than other written texts, Michael Gaydos is able to manipulate the vantage point for each frame, such that the identity of this adversary remains secret.
By the end of this chapter, Greg Hettinger is in a whole heap of trouble and it’s going to be very interesting to see how he manages to extract himself. Of course, readers are going to have to wait for Chapter Three to find out where Duane Swierczynski is going to take us.
The gritty nature of the comic as described in the Chapter One review continues and is actually ramped up further in Chapter Two. Blood, violence and language flood every page. Because of the naturalistic style of the storytelling, this never feels gratuitous. Dark Circle Comics‘ The Black Hood continues to break new ground in the genre and will hopefully continue to reach new fans with each subsequent issue.
