From The Booking Desk:

Yesterday, we celebrated the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., so that is why the BOLO report is a day late. However, that means the books releasing this week are available immediately!

Ragnar Jonasson – Rupture (Minotaur, Hardcover, $28.99, 01/22/2019

BOLO Books Comments:

The BOLO Books Review of Rupture ran back when the book was first released by Orenda Books (out of the UK). It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Ragnar Jonasson’s work. He is writing novels that will stand the test of time and I encourage anyone who is a fan of traditional crime fiction to give his work a try. I just know you won’t be disappointed.

Jacket Copy (Publisher’s Description):

Hailed for combining the darkness of Nordic Noir with classic mystery writing, author Ragnar Jonasson’s books are haunting, atmospheric, and complex. Rupture, the latest Ari Thór thriller, delivers another dark mystery that is chillingly stunning with its complexity and fluidity.

Young policeman Ari Thór tries to solve a 50-year-old murder when new evidence surfaces. But the case proves difficult in a town where no one wants to know the truth, where secrets are a way of life. He’s assisted by Ísrún, a news reporter in Reykjavik who is investigating an increasingly chilling case of her own. Things take a sinister turn when a child goes missing in broad daylight. With a stalker on the loose, and the town in quarantine, the past might just come back to haunt them.

Steph Post – Miraculum (Polis, Hardcover, $26.00, 01/22/2019)

BOLO Books Comments:

It can be difficult to pull off a novel that blends together so many disparate genres, but with Miraculum, Steph Post has done it. Fans of Erin Morganstern’s The Night Circus will find much to enjoy here, but Post’s novel is more firmly rooted in the world of the “pre-dust bowl” carny aesthetic. Her unique turns-of-phrase paint word-pictures that blossom to life in the reader’s mind, sweeping away the hours until the final pages are turned.

Jacket Copy (Publisher’s Description):

The year is 1922. The carnival is Pontilliar’s Spectacular Star Light Miraculum, staked out on the Texas-Louisiana border. One blazing summer night, a mysterious stranger steps onto the midway, lights a cigarette and forever changes the world around him. Tattooed snake charmer Ruby has traveled with her father’s carnival for most of her life and, jaded though she is, can’t help but be drawn to the tall man in the immaculate black suit who conveniently joins the carnival as a chicken-biting geek. Mercurial and charismatic, Daniel charms everyone he encounters, but his manipulation of Ruby turns complicated when it’s no longer clear who’s holding all the cards. Daniel is full of secrets, but he hadn’t counted on Ruby having a few of her own.

When one tragedy after another strikes the carnival―and it becomes clear that Daniel is somehow at the center of calamity―Ruby takes it upon herself to discover the mystery of the shadowy man pulling all the strings. Joined by Hayden, a roughneck-turned-mural-painter wrestling demons of his own, Ruby engages Daniel in a dangerous, eye-opening game in which nothing is as it seems and everything is at stake.

Steph Post has firmly established herself as one of the most original and captivating voices in contemporary fiction, and with Miraculum she has written an unforgettable novel that is part Southern Gothic, part Noir, part Magical Realism, and all Steph Post.

E. G. Scott – The Woman Inside (Dutton, Hardcover, $27.00, 01/022/2019)

BOLO Books Comments:

Domestic suspense tales continue to mine the complexities of relationships. While this one doesn’t offer much new to the landscape, it’s certainly gripping enough to keep fans of the sub-genre invested for the quick read.

Jacket Copy (Publisher’s Description):

Rebecca didn’t know love was possible until she met Paul, a successful, charismatic, married man with a past as dark as her own. Their pain drew them together with an irresistible magnetism; they sensed that they were each other’s ideal (and perhaps only) match.

But twenty years later, Paul and Rebecca are drowning as the damage and secrets that ignited their love begin to consume their marriage. Paul is cheating on Rebecca, and his affair gets messy fast. His mistress is stalking them with growing audacity when Rebecca discovers Paul’s elaborate plan to build a new life without her. And though Rebecca is spiraling into an opiate addiction, it doesn’t stop her from coming up with a devious plot of her own, and this one could end absolutely everything.

What follows is an unpredictable and stylish game of cat and mouse—a shocking tale of unfaithfulness and unreliability that will keep you racing until the final twist and make you wonder how well you really know your spouse.
