From The Booking Desk:

This past weekend was the unofficial start of summer, which means that many people will have more time to devote to pleasure reading – while on vacation, by the pool or beach, with no other distractions. This also means that publishers will be releasing those books that are sure to please readers of all types. Here are a few coming out this week.

Tracy Clark – Borrowed Time (Kensington, Hardcover, $26.00, 05/28/2019)

BOLO Books Comments:

I admit to being late to the Tracy Clark party, but I think that I made up for it by being loud and boisterous once I did arrive. The BOLO Books review of Broken Places will give you an idea of how much I love this series character. This second book in the series is getting equally strong buzz and it’s my next read, so look for a review sometime next week.

Jacket Copy (Publisher’s Description):

Sitting in cold cars for hours, serving lowlifes with summonses . . . being a P.I. means riding out a lot of slow patches. But sometimes the most familiar paths can lead straight to danger—like at Cass’s go-to diner, where new delivery guy Jung Byson wants to enlist her expertise. Jung’s friend, Tim Ayers, scion of a wealthy Chicago family, has been found dead, floating in Lake Michigan near his luxury boat. And Jung is convinced there’s a murderer on the loose . . .

Cass reluctantly begins digging only to discover that Jung neglected to mention one crucial fact: Tim Ayers was terminally ill. Given the large quantities of alcohol and drugs found in his body, Ayers’ death appears to be either an accident or suicide. Yet as much as Cass would like to dismiss Jung’s suspicions, there are too many unanswered questions and unexplained coincidences.

Why would anyone kill a dying man? Working her connections on both sides of the law, Cass tries to point the police in the right direction. But violence is escalating around her, and Cass’s persistence has already attracted unwanted attention, uncovering sinister secrets that Cass may end up taking to her grave.

Linda Castillo – In Plain Sight (Minotaur, e-book, $1.99, 05/28/2019)

BOLO Books Comments:

Linda Castillo’s Amish-focused Kate Burkholder series shows no signs of slowing down. I’ve been a fan from the start and you can find reviews of many of the earlier books here on BOLO Books. Also, look for Linda as part of the Composite Sketch profile series in the near future.

Jacket Copy (Publisher’s Description):

Seventeen year old Amish boy, Noah Kline, is struck by a car as he walks alongside a dark country road late one night in Painters Mill. Seriously injured, he lapses into a coma. Initially, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder believes it’s a straightforward hit and run, a driver that panicked and fled. But evidence soon emerges that the incident wasn’t accidental at all–and Kate uncovers a story of teenage passion and jealousy that may have led to attempted murder.

Karen Cleveland – Keep You Close (Ballantine, Hardcover, $27.00, 05/28/2019)

BOLO Books Comments:

I was a big fan of Karen Cleveland’s debut last year. You can find the BOLO Books review of Need To Know here. This unique blend of domestic drama and political thriller all wrapped up in eminently readable prose seems like it’s going to be her trademark – and for that, readers should be very happy indeed.

Jacket Copy (Publisher’s Description):

Stephanie Maddox works her dream job policing power and exposing corruption within the FBI. Getting here has taken her nearly two decades of hard work, laser focus, and personal sacrifices—the most important, she fears, being a close relationship with her teenage son, Zachary. A single parent, Steph’s missed a lot of school events, birthdays, and vacations with her boy—but the truth is, she would move heaven and earth for him, including protecting him from an explosive secret in her past. It just never occurred to her that Zachary would keep secrets of his own.

One day while straightening her son’s room, Steph is shaken to discover a gun hidden in his closet. A loaded gun. Then comes a knock at her front door—a colleague on the domestic terrorism squad, who utters three devastating words: “It’s about Zachary.”

So begins a compulsively readable thriller of deception and betrayal, as Stephanie fights to clear her son’s name, only to expose a shadowy conspiracy that threatens to destroy them both—and bring a country to its knees. Packed with shocking twists and intense family drama, Keep You Close is an electrifying exploration of the shattering consequences of the love that binds—and sometimes blinds—a mother and her child.
